In brief
In the E-Mycin leaflet, erythromycin, a macrolide antibiotic, is used against bacterial infections, alongside other medicines for acne, and to prevent infection in some penicillin-allergic heart patients.
Uses of erythromycin
The E-Mycin consumer medicine information lists treatment of bacterial infections, acne control alongside other acne medicines, and prevention of infection in penicillin-allergic people who have rheumatic disease, congenital heart disease or another acquired valvular heart disease. It does nothing against viral infections like colds or flu.
This listing shows erythromycin 250 mg and 500 mg. It does not name the manufacturer of the tablets supplied, so check the label on the pack you receive and confirm with your prescriber or pharmacist that it matches your prescription.
500 mg packs side by side
The comparison uses 500 mg only. These examples are calculated from the listed prices at the shop’s Australian-dollar rate on 8 October 2026, before delivery or other checkout charges.
| Strength | Pack size | Pack price | Price per unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 mg | 30 | A$63.20 | A$2.11 |
| 500 mg | 180 | A$277.25 | A$1.54 |
| 500 mg | 360 | A$517.15 | A$1.44 |
The unit price drops by close to 26.9% in the 180 pack and 31.8% in the 360 pack, measured against the 30 pack.
A lower price per unit means a larger upfront payment. Choose only the quantity and strength appropriate to your prescription, and check the expiry date. Prices can change, so confirm the current pack price before ordering.
E-Mycin as the quoted brand, and azithromycin
E-Mycin is the erythromycin brand whose leaflet is quoted on this page. Azithromycin, sold as Zithromax, is a different medicine from the azalide sub-class of macrolides, and the Zithromax leaflet says it is not for people with an erythromycin allergy.
Who should avoid erythromycin
According to the E-Mycin leaflet, it is not taken by people allergic to erythromycin or other macrolides, by those with severe liver disease or heart rhythm disorders, or together with medicines such as terfenadine, cisapride and simvastatin that interact dangerously. In pregnancy or while breastfeeding, the doctor helps weigh risks against benefits.
Course, side effects and storage
The leaflet ties the dose to the kind and severity of infection and asks for the whole course to be completed, even if symptoms improve. Less serious effects listed are nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, oral or vaginal thrush, headache and fever. More serious are drowsiness, hallucinations, dizziness, aching muscles, an irregular heartbeat, hearing or vision problems, and jaundice. Allergic reactions and watery, bloody or severe diarrhoea are very serious. Storage for E-Mycin tablets is under 30 °C. Follow the storage directions on the pack you receive.
