In brief
Carbamazepine is used to control several types of epileptic seizure, to treat idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, and for mania and the maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder.
Uses of carbamazepine
For Teril, a carbamazepine brand, healthdirect lists epilepsy with partial seizures (simple or complex), generalised seizures that include a tonic-clonic component, or mixed seizure types. Idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, mania and maintenance therapy for bipolar disorder are also listed, and Teril may be used on its own or with other epilepsy treatment.
This listing shows carbamazepine 100 mg, 200 mg and 400 mg. It does not name the manufacturer of the tablets supplied, so check the label on the pack you receive and confirm with your prescriber or pharmacist that it matches your prescription.
100 mg: 30, 90 and 180
Compare packs of the same strength. These examples are for 100 mg and are calculated from the listed prices at the shop’s Australian-dollar rate on 8 October 2026, before delivery or other checkout charges.
| Strength | Pack size | Pack price | Price per unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 mg | 30 | A$38.77 | A$1.29 |
| 100 mg | 90 | A$91.93 | A$1.02 |
| 100 mg | 180 | A$158.01 | A$0.88 |
Per unit, the 90 pack comes out about 21.0% below the 30 pack, and the 180 pack about 32.1% below.
A lower price per unit means a larger upfront payment. Choose only the quantity and strength appropriate to your prescription, and check the expiry date. Prices can change, so confirm the current pack price before ordering.
Limits and Australian brands
Carbamazepine is not effective in absence, atonic or myoclonic seizures, should not be used for status epilepticus, and is not meant for trivial facial pain or headache. Tegretol (Novartis) comes as 100 mg and 200 mg tablets, 200 mg and 400 mg controlled-release tablets and a suspension; Teril is an uncoated 200 mg tablet on Schedule 4. The formulation supplied here is not stated.
Contraindications and precautions
The Tegretol consumer medicine information lists allergy to carbamazepine, blood disorders, severe liver disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, AV block and hepatic porphyria as reasons not to use it, along with tricyclic antidepressants or MAO inhibitors. A pre-treatment blood test may be required for people of Han Chinese or Thai background because of serious skin reactions.
The leaflet mentions a possible risk of birth defects if taken while pregnant. Women relying on the pill or other hormonal contraception need a non-hormonal method as well, since Tegretol makes oral contraceptives less effective. Alcohol and grapefruit juice are to be avoided, according to the same leaflet.
Doses, possible effects and keeping the tablets
According to Tegretol’s leaflet, tablets are swallowed with water during or after a meal, generally two to three times a day as the doctor directs, and CR tablets are not crushed. Listed effects, without frequencies, include tiredness, dizziness or fainting, feeling sick, vomiting, dry mouth, weight gain, swelling, changes in taste, poor coordination, blurred or double vision, confusion, depression, numbness or tingling, and skin problems. Tegretol is stored below 30 °C in a dry place. Follow the storage directions on the pack you receive.
